Faithful In The Little Things

Faithful In The Little Things

When I was 18 years old, I had a job working in a slaughterhouse. It was filthy work cleaning out animal waste all day. I got used to the smell and the waste, but I worked alone for a large part of the day. I was only recently saved and one day this thought comes to my mind. “I am going to work and clean this place as if it was the Lord’s house” I am going to make my work “worship and adoration to God.”

This was an enlightenment for me. I got this supernatural urge to do something for God, but I was just working a normal job. I was inspired by scripture that came from Colossians 3:23-24, ‘Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.

You can say it became my worship to God to work and clean and do things well – exceptionally well. Something so filthy, so boring, became joy and worship to me. It gave me the joy to do what I am doing now.

One of my colleagues asked why I was doing this and I said with such joy, “This is my worship”. This changed my attitude from depression to joy as I saw purpose in loving God through my work. A little while later, this change in me was noticed and I was promoted to the departmental assistant manager – all because I worked as if working for the Lord.

We need to understand something about God. God looks for those that are faithful in the little things before he puts them in charge of greater things. Remember the parable Jesus told about the talents? From this parable, we can reflect on the spiritual gifts God has given to us. Do we use them or just play safe? Give what you have and you will be given more. God wants to give you more. Will you use what you have and take steps of faith and risk to grow?
